The Beluga Bulletin provides updates on the ongoing research efforts by Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) in collaboration with the Fisheries Joint Management Committee (FJMC) and Inuvialuit communities. Notable projects include the fish movement study in the Ulukhaktok region, where data from tagged fish and ocean receivers are being analyzed to understand habitat use and fish migration patterns. The 2019 summer field season will be busy with multiple programs, including beluga health monitoring, telemetry work, and aerial surveys to better understand the beluga population and ecosystem. Additionally, the Beluga Summit II, planned for 2021, will focus on integrating Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) and Western Science to address themes like beluga movement, health, and cultural aspects of the harvest. This research aims to support informed decision-making for the conservation and management of the region's marine life.
